Big Akwa

Big Akwa is developing and building land-based fish farming with zero emissions in symbiosis with nearby industries in Västernorrland. The first farmed fish will be ready for delivery in 2027, and buyers are already lined up across Europe. The food tech company Big Akwa will produce 6,000 tons of fish per year through its land-based fish farming while creating new jobs in Ånge. Now, Almost There is investing in the business.

“We import 60% of all fish consumed in the EU today, and 70% of the fish consumed in Sweden. The market is also growing by 4% per year. Such a large import volume is not sustainable when we could produce more fish within Europe in a sustainable way,” says Hugo Wikström, Co-founder and Deputy CEO of Big Akwa.

Big Akwa is now beginning the construction of large-scale land-based fish farms in Ånge. The farms will consist of rainbow trout, a well-bred and stable fish with high demand in the Nordic region and the rest of Europe. Big Akwa is also working towards industrial symbiosis between fish farming and the process industry, where greywater from fish farming can be used by nearby industries for bio-purification instead of being released into nature.

“We want to be an example of how to act holistically in food production, through an operation that makes use of everything in production and collaborates closely with neighboring industries. We hope that more will follow our example,” says Hugo Wikström.

Almost There enters as an investor in Big Akwa in summer of 2024 to support the continued development of the business.
